Celiac disease or not, here are some rules of thumb for healthy shopping:

1.   Buy fresh food!

2.   Always shop the perimeter of the store first.

3.   Shop with a list.

4.   Speak up at the deli counter. Be proactive and ensure that the brands of deli meats you choose are gluten-free.

5.   Do not shop on an empty stomach.

6.   Stock up on frozen fruits and vegetables.

7.   Embrace the mighty bean.

8.   Look for fiber. Take it easy as you introduce or increase servings of quinoa, corn, pure oats, and other gluten-free alternatives to wheat.

9.   Dress up your morning cereal. You don’t need to limit yourself to plain cream of rice. Why not add some fresh or frozen fruit, raisins, plain roasted almond slivers, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, ground flax seeds, or chia seeds?

10.   Buy plain yogurt and flavor it at home.

       11.   Try delicious gluten-free baked items.
